ABOUT

The Therapist Behind the Treatment

A Vancouver RMT grounded in curiosity, care, and a deep respect for every person who trusts me with their body.

WHO I AM

Otto Chan, RMT

I began my studies at Vancouver College of Massage Therapy in 2017 and graduated in 2020 with an Honour Roll standing, and have been developing my practice as a Registered Massage Therapist based in Greater Vancouver ever since. In 2022 I took the leap to go independent. This decision felt less like a business choice and more like an alignment with who I am and what I knew I could offer my community. From the stylistic choices in the studio to the lotions used during treatment, down to each word you read, everything has been carefully curated. You’ll find pieces of my energy signature woven throughout.

Outside the clinic, I play tennis and volleyball, meditate, read, write, and consult Tarot cards. I love chatting and connecting over hobbies so if any of these align with you feel free to strike up a conversation. :)

FOUNDATIONS OF PRACTICE

What I stand for

These aren't marketing words. They're the operating principles that show up in every session.

Safety First

A genuine safe space

Nothing happens without your agreement. The treatment room runs on informed consent and clear communication, and you can adjust, pause, or stop at any point. Always.

Inclusion

Welcoming all bodies

I have explicit training in gender diversity and trauma-informed practice, and my work is LGBTQ+ affirming. Regardless of your background, body, or identity - you belong here. Those who bring hate, judgement, or bigotry do not.

Clinical Reasoning

Assessment over assumption

I start every session by actually listening to you. Your history, your concerns, your patterns. Then I think through an approach rather than running the same protocol on every body that comes in.

Accessibility

Care for everyone

Financial barriers shouldn't determine who gets access to care. Sliding scale, pro bono, and trade arrangements are available for patients who need them. Just ask.

Growth

Lifelong learning

Continuing education is ongoing, not a box I ticked at graduation. Joining my practice means investing in a health care professional who is interested in staying up to date with best practices.

Consistency

Always the same therapist

This is a solo practice. Every session is with me. Your history accumulates, your preferences are remembered, and your treatment builds on itself rather than starting over each time.

POST-GRADUATE TRAINING

RMTs complete 3,000 hours of training before certification. What happens after that matters just as much. Here's a selection of my post-graduate work:

    • Simply TMJ (Robert Hackwood / DynamicTherapies)

  • 2024

    • Best Practices for Assessment, Measurement and Charting (Webinar)

    • The Manual and Movement Therapist’s Community (Active Member)

  • 2022

    • Indigenous Canada - University of Alberta (Coursera)

  • 2021

    • Integrating a Trauma-Informed Approach into Routine Physical Therapy Practice [3-part Webinar] (Candice L Schacter, PT, PhD, CPTBC)

    • Evidence Based Interventions for Low Back and Pelvic Pain Webinar (West Coast RMT Collective)

    • Intro to Gender Diversity - Expanded

WHAT’S NEXT

Health science & counselling

I'm currently working toward a Bachelor of Health Science, with a longer term goal of a Master's in Counselling.

This is not just an academic pursuit, but a lifelong dream. Physical pain and psychological wellbeing are deeply connected, and the most effective care for chronic tension, persistent pain, and stress-related presentations will always address both.

I am dedicated to uncovering these truths and finding meaningful ways to address the whole person, not just the body that shows up on the table.

What People Are Saying

  • On intuition & presence: "He has a very deep intuition of how your body holds stress. His treatments are a total blend of East meets West, where the focus is on the person, not just the symptoms. You leave feeling revived."

    — MU

  • On feeling safe: "I always feel safe with Otto and leave feeling calm and a sense of well-being. He checks in throughout each session and has a very professional, warm and gentle approach."

    — BN

  • On attunement: "Before my first treatment I was skeptical of all the 5 star reviews. Several treatments later I find myself writing this without any solicitation. He is attuned to my needs and somehow just knows to apply the most therapeutic pressure."

    — FL

  • On individuality: "Far and above the best RMT I have ever experienced. Otto has an innately intuitive touch, a gently straightforward approach to individually-specific concerns, and creates a wonderfully unassuming, welcoming environment."
