NEW PATIENTS
What to Expect
From your first booking to your first session and beyond, here's how it all works.
BEFORE YOU ARRIVE
Your first visit, demystified
First sessions with a new RMT can feel uncertain, especially if you've had a difficult experience with massage before or if you have specific needs or concerns. This page is here to take that uncertainty off the table.
What follows is a straightforward walkthrough of everything from the moment you book to what the session will actually feel like. If something still isn't clear after reading this, check the FAQ or just get in touch directly.
YOUR FIRST SESSION
Step by step
Step 1: Book online
Booking is done through JaneApp. Choose your session length (60 minutes is a good starting point for a first visit), pick a time that works, and confirm. You'll get a confirmation email with location details and a link to your intake form.
If you have questions before booking, about whether your condition is a good fit, about access options, or anything else, send a message first. There's no pressure to book before you feel ready.
Step 2: Complete the intake form
Before your first session you'll fill out a short health history form. It covers your current concerns, relevant medical history, medications, and anything I should know before working with you.
The form is confidential and helps shape how your first session is structured. The more honest and specific you are, the more useful it is. You're never obligated to share, and you can share as much or as little as you want. It's there to make your session feel safer, nothing else.
Step 3: Arrive and check in
Plan to arrive a few minutes early for your first session. I'll review your intake form with you and we'll have a brief conversation about your main concerns, what's been going on in your body, and what you're hoping to get out of the session.
This isn't a formality. That conversation often changes the direction of the treatment in ways that make it significantly more effective.
Step 4: Consent and communication
Before anything starts, I'll explain what I'm planning for the session and confirm you're on board. We'll talk through draping preferences, pressure preferences, and any areas to avoid. This is a real conversation, not a checklist to get through.
You're in control throughout. You can ask to adjust pressure, temperature, or focus at any point. You can ask to pause. You can end the session. None of that requires an explanation or an apology.
Step 5: Treatment
Techniques used can include neuromuscular technique, myofascial release, joint mobilization, Swedish relaxation, and for TMJ patients, intra-oral massage. The combination comes from your assessment, not a fixed menu.
You might also be asked to take a breath, shift position, or give feedback on what you're feeling. That's part of how the work stays effective.
After the session, take your time getting up. It's normal to feel deeply relaxed, a bit spacey, or to notice some soreness the following day, similar to how you feel after using muscles you haven't worked in a while.
Step 6: Home care and next steps
Every session ends with a brief home care conversation if indicated and requested. That might include stretches, movement suggestions, postural adjustments, or just practical advice for the rest of your day (enjoy nature, rest if you can, skip the heavy workout).
I'll also give you a recommendation on follow-up frequency based on what came up. For acute issues, weekly sessions are often suggested at first. For maintenance, monthly is typical. For chronic conditions, we'll talk through what makes sense as we go.
PRACTICAL DETAILS
What to wear, bring, and know
What to wear
Wear something comfortable you can easily change out of. Most patients undress to their underwear, but there's no obligation. I use draping throughout the session, so only the area being worked on is ever exposed. If you'd prefer to stay fully clothed, just say so. Treatment is still possible.
How to prepare
Avoid a heavy meal in the hour before your session. Skip heavy lotions or oils on the areas being worked on since they can interfere with some techniques. If you have imaging results from a specific injury (X-ray, MRI), you're welcome to bring them along, but it's not required.
What to bring
After filling out your intake form digitally in advance, there’s nothing to print or fill out when you arrive so just your lovely self. That's genuinely it.
After your session
You may feel deeply relaxed, mildly lightheaded, or a bit sore the next day. All of that is normal. Avoid intense exercise for the rest of the day if you can. If you notice unexpected pain or unusual symptoms after a session, reach out.
